Route Board Phase Out!

I have grown mighty weary of the dry erase marker “system”. Too many accidental erasures from someone resting their big head against the board is the primary culprit. I also feel that six (routes per rope) has become a rut that I need to break out of (you’ll notice eight routes on Rope 1, but they needed to be squeezed in where there really wasn’t space).

So the boards are being phased out. The board for Ropes 1 thru 7 is gone! History. A collector’s item. Look for it on e-Bay. The other side’s board goes out tomorrow. And then the bouldering board should be gone by Saturday.

You’ll just have to see what I’ve come up with.

The suspense is killing me
how about not rating anything and just go for the “fun” aspect?? Or, write the ratings on the tape? But then how about when the tape disappears from the wall, how will we know how many holds there should be on the route? Or, just assign a rating code for each different color tape?

Your suggestion, Todd, to “just assign a rating code for each different color tape” would have the consequence of leading, for instance, a Yellow Rope 6 climber onto Yellow Rope 5 and/or Yellow Rope 7 route. That would certainly make for some interesting climbs, and awesome pendulum falls!

I witnessed the birth of the new route listing system last night. It looks good and will work even better for the bouldering board.

ok
that was a lame idea, but it still has “fun” in it,,,,just kidding… Now I’m really curious, but I’m sure Tom has thought it through and it will be awesome, if not, we’ll comment here….

The new Rope 8 thru 13 route “kiosk” is now in place. Done Saturday.

While I was at it I set two new routes on Rope 12—a 5.10a and a 5.10b.

The new Bouldering problem “kiosk” should be installed on Sunday. The real reason for the changeover was to have a way to quickly re-list the bouldering problems in order of their age after stripping problems that grew too old without re-writing all the information.

...I’ve seen the new system for the board and it looks good. But more importantly the problem with the disappearing hold counts and the rating of the route itself is settled, there is no more smearing of what was written. looks good, good job.

Some climbers notice, some don’t, the list of abbreviations we use for bouldering terms (e..g “LF” for Little Feet) that is taped beside the bouldering kiosk.

Beyond that list we have some traditional “rules” to our bouldering problems (chevron(s) for starts and all that…) which are occasionally stated in brief (as in the introduction for the Week 6 Beginner class) but not always universally understood. Their only value is that they offer the boulderer a more complete sense of the routesetter’s intent. To send the problem really means to send it within those rules, otherwise the challenge really is not being met. Ignore the rules if you want, but you probably will be missing out on some interesting challenges and “sending” an easier problem than you thought.

We will use the terms abbreviation list to display these rules.
