Mapping the routes

So i’ve seen other gyms post guides to all the routes currently up on their walls on their websites’ forums and i’ve been trying to think how we could do something similar at FP. Is this something people would be interested in? The way i’ve seen it on other sites is just a grid showing all the different TR routes and boulder routes with their rankings, who made it, when it was made, a brief description, etc. This seems pretty simple, it just means that people would have to update it whenever they take down or put up a new route. I’ve been trying to think of something a little more glamorous for us, maybe taking pictures of the routes or creating some sort of google map like representation. I know there are some computer nerds frequenting this forum. Any thoughts? I would gladly volunteer my technical services for this project. Any one else?

great idea man. I’ve seen static maps (image files of the wall that is not editable) from gyms. could you post a few examples you have found?

For us, may a quick way to start something like this is to write one post per route/problem, and have climbers comment and post photos to it. What do you guys think?

Here are two links, to the same site. This is one of the more detailed sites i’ve seen.

I agree, great idea. I can think of some ways to make it pretty cool and interactive. Does anybody have a digital camera with a fairly wide angle lens? That would be the best way to get a picture of an entire route. Rope 1 is new… seems like a good place to start.

I started playing around with Google SketchUp (their 3d design tool), trying to make a model of the gym. I’m not sure whether this will help us at all with this project but what else am i going to do at work all day.

Call me short on imagination, but doesn’t marking a route with tape and noting the number of tapings on the board do the trick? I’ve seen route maps in some gyms and thought they were pretty useless to the climber—maybe they’re useful to the these gyms’ routesetters who need a way to maintain their routes. At FP we just store all that stuff in our heads (well, at least I do), and if tape falls we usually spot it and replace it.

That said, I’d love to help if it makes the experience more fun and gives people something to do when at work!
