Tom’s Reason #2 to Climb Better. A surprising number of people don’t know about this performance-based giveaway even though it is posted in the gym: Once you’ve estabished your FFC top rope climbing ability level you can earn a free visit whenever you break through to the next level. For example… if Chris Sharma comes in and sends a 5.15c he gets a free follow-up visit! How cool is that!
The only catches are these…
1) entry level is 5.8;
2) someone on the paid staff has to witness it (most people will cave under the added pressure!);
3) you only get three shots at that route that day before we say “Nice try, Jack!”
But really, here are the rules:
Rule 1: entry level is 5.8 (higher for climbers who are already above 5.8)Rule 2: climber gets 3 chances on any particular route
Rule 3: no beta from others during the climb
Rule 4: effort must be announced and staff must witness entire climb
Rule 5: only “clean” ascents qualify (pretty doesn’t matter!)
