Free Admission for Redpointers!

Tom’s Reason #2 to Climb Better. A surprising number of people don’t know about this performance-based giveaway even though it is posted in the gym: Once you’ve estabished your FFC top rope climbing ability level you can earn a free visit whenever you break through to the next level. For example… if Chris Sharma comes in and sends a 5.15c he gets a free follow-up visit! How cool is that!

The only catches are these… 1) entry level is 5.8; 2) someone on the paid staff has to witness it (most people will cave under the added pressure!); 3) you only get three shots at that route that day before we say “Nice try, Jack!”

But really, here are the rules:

Rule 1: entry level is 5.8 (higher for climbers who are already above 5.8)
Rule 2: climber gets 3 chances on any particular route
Rule 3: no beta from others during the climb
Rule 4: effort must be announced and staff must witness entire climb
Rule 5: only “clean” ascents qualify (pretty doesn’t matter!)

Sorry. It’s TR Only! No bouldering sends count—our bouldering ratings are a tinge sloppy while rope routes see a little more attention to detail.

ps-I’ll give Zac a free climb for the 12b on rope 11. Pete and I worked it a little last night and it turns out to be more than a wee harder than the 12a.

We have a handy dandy list for the scads of climbers that are now on The Redpoint Highway. To make it interesting we’re giving you only three official tries to send a route (“official” means you’ve asked us to watch and you are going for it). They don’t have to be three tries in a row—if you fail on a try you don’t have to try again until you feel like it. Practice before and between tries all you want—that’s kind of what redpointing is (except it’s not really a toproping term). If you fail on three official tries you’ll have to find another route at the desired rating.

Mwhaaaa!
