Earthwatch Institute Expeditions

Earthwatch Institute is a nonprofit organization that allows travelers to join research teams around the world that are focused on achieving a sustainable environment. Trips take place in over 40 countries around the world with project topics ranging from climate change to archeology to wildlife conservation.

These expeditions sound like a great way to have a unique and fulfilling vacation. Has anyone been on a volunteer trip like this?

I have not volunteered through this organization, but am very interested! I included some information I found on the site regarding an Earth Day event taking place in Chicago. Sounds interesting and fun, and maybe a good way to find out some more info.

North Lake Shore Earth Day 2008 Saturday 12 April, 2008 North Lake Shore Earth Day 2008 Chicago, IL, Loyola University Saturday, April 12, 2008, 9:30am-4pm

Loyola University Chicago, Quinlan Life Sciences Building, 1050 W. Sheridan Road (Sheridan & Kenmore). See map for details.

The event will include speakers on a wide variety of environmental topics, and display tables from many leading environmental groups. Confirmed guest speakers include elected officials, Loyola faculty and local policy-makers: Dr. Al Gini, NPR personality and Loyola Faculty; Debra Shore, Commissioner, Water Reclamation District; Alderman Mary Ann Smith; Suzanne Malec-McKenna, Commissioner for Chicago’s Department of the Environment. Visit the Earthwatch booth at the celebration.

For more information contact Summur Roberts at srober6@luc.edu.

If you have been on an expedition and would like to help staff the Earthwatch booth, please contact Katie Karn.

This event is co-sponsored by leading groups in the Rogers Park, Edgewater, Andersonville, Uptown, Ravenswood, and West Ridge Communities in Chicago. Complimentary parking at the Parking Structure on Loyola’s campus. CTA red line.
