Colitis

Bella, my 4 years old beagle has been living with colitis since she was a puppy. I’ve tried every food brand out there and found the only one that somewhat agrees with her stomach is the prescription Eukanuba Low Residue adult food. I know there are much better quality foods out there, but I just haven’t found one that works yet. Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated.

Have you tried any of the premium human grade dog foods out there? These foods are typically not available in larger pet food or grocery stores; and the processing of some of these food are different as well. Bella may have food sensitivity to some proteins and grains. What does your vet have to say about her condition? I suggest taking her to Blum Animal Hospital on Clark Street in Chicago. They have state-of-art facilities, and some of the best vets in the city.

Some example of the premium food include: Wellness, Nature’s Variety, Evo, Wysong, Solid Gold, Artemis, Innova, Timberwolf….etc. The list is endlist.

Yup I’ve tried almost all those foods you have listed including, single protein such as duck, venison, fish, etc. I’ve even looked on the World Dog Journal for the best human grade foods. No luck. Currently I’m feeding her Eukanuba low residue and a few pieces of Evo dog food(which she loves!). We’ll see what happens.

Here is a good resource with information about colitis: dogaware.com

That page includes suggestions on diet as well as on supplements and treatments which may help.

Has anyone tried Burns holistic dog food?

I stopped by Wigglyville today and got a few samples to try. I really want to wean Bella off of the prescription Iams Low Residue(at $60 a bag) to a better quality food which probably cost less. Let’s keep our paws crossed.
