Chasing Shadows

Toby my 4.5 years old golden has an obsession with shadows. On a sunny day out in the yard, he would pounce on shadows from anything that moves(bird, moving leaf, etc). Inside the house he stares at the carpet waiting for a moving shadow to happen and starts pouncing on the floor. Sometimes he also stares at the wall like he’s possesd waiting for something to move. Any suggestions on training tips to correct this behavior is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

That is the reason why it’s not good to play with a dog by having it chase laser pointers or flashlights with dogs. It confuses the dog because it’s something unexpected of unknown origin that they can see, but cannot smell, then it disappears. I’m not sure if that was done with your dog, and I’m not sure how severe the behavior is with your dog. But dogs can become obsessed with anything. The behavior should be interrupted & discouraged, such as a loud sharp noise (like AH-ah!) such as yelling at the dog, then have the dog lay down, then free the dog and try to encourage something else. Then, think about the bigger picture, most dogs who become obsessed are bored and frustrated, no outlet for their energy, and in this case prey drive, and need more activity and stimulation overall.
