I came across this thread on rockclimbing.com. very interesting discussion. I have seen some crazily chalked-up routes at the Red River Gorge. I could totally see how non-climbers can get totally annoyed…

I can see both sides… it does spoil the natural beauty a little bit, but I also think it can be kind of cool looking. And I’m a heavy chalk user, so I can understand why it happens.
I’ve seen brown (and other colors) advertised, but I wonder whether it feels the same. Worth a shot I guess if it prevents people from complaining and keeps climbing areas open.
