Cat & Aquarium...a bad combination?

I have a cat and am thinking about getting an aquarium. I think my cat would enjoy watching the fish, but I’m concerned that he may try to jump on it or knock it down. We don’t have the space for a huge aquarium, so it would have to be on the smaller side. My cat is rather large (15 lbs) so he can easily knock things over if he wants to and might break a tank lid if he stepped/jumped on it.

Does anyone have both a cat and an aquarium? Any advice? Are there tank lids that are actually cat-proof and won’t cave in if stepped on? Would the fish be OK with having a cat pawing at the glass occasionally or would it make them crazy? Thanks!

I used to have a small tank, and my cat never cared much. At times I would even hold the cat up to the aquarium so he can “sight see”. He fish watched for a bit and pawed the glass here and there but was never intrigued enough to jump on the aquarium. I also had a friend with a bigger aquarium and a cat. Didn’t seem to have any problems. Nevertheless, I think it depends on the cat. I’m sure they have heavier lids out there that are cat proof.
