Tens of thousands of cats have been rounded up in Beijing by the Chinese government in an attempt to ‘clean up’ the city prior to the Olympic games. Cats who are caught are crammed in boxes too small for them to turn around in and are sent to holding facilities where they are killed or sold to restaurants that serve cat meat.

Apparently not satisfied with torturing feral cats, the Chinese government also started a campaign alleging that cats carry disease to convince people to turn in their pet cats as well. The government propaganda has caused many cat owners to become terrified by the disease warning, so they are dumping their pets in the streets to be picked up by special collection teams. The widespread panic also led school teachers to beat 6 cats to death with sticks – including 2 pregnant female cats.

While some animal-rights advocates in China are attempting to stop this horror, they fear repercussions from the powerful government. It seems this situation may continue until there is sufficient pressure to stop it from the international community – like there was about a year ago when the Chinese were caught trapping and killing dogs for meat.
